A merry and peaceful time with your family? Hardly. There’s the anguish of getting all the presents, the constant X-masparties hangover, those cheesy glowing reindeer and insufferable onslaught of carols. And the end of the year serves as an annoying reminder of all our abandoned resolutions because we are neither 20 pounds lighter nor have we quit smoking. Escape the ‘holiday season is upon us’ terror and seek shelter in the cinema with a programme of entertaining and touching anti-Christmas shorts. They’ll show you that your situation might be much worse thus arming you with a dose of necessary holiday optimism.

Blue Christmas (UK, USA)

Alec is a young Dad who works as a debt collector in a Scottish seaside town. It’s Christmas Eve in 1968. Debtors as well as creditors are on a holiday break. Alex would rather be at work though, as it’s a literal loony bin at home. The film was selected for the prestigious festivals Sundance and IFF Toronto.

Gremlins: Recall (USA)

The cuddly, fluffy Mogway is on top of everyone’s Christmas list. There are only three simple rules to follow when keeping one as a pet: no exposure to sunlight, absolutely no getting him wet and no way in hell for feeding after midnight. An ageing married couple gets on each others nerves all year long but at Christmas it gets even worse. She’s one grumpy shrew, he’s a good-for-nothing, unable to even kill a carp for dinner. An unlucky thief is stuck in their bathroom, terrified of getting whacked on the head in the carp’s place or being slapped to death by the abrasive wife. A comedy for the holidays produced by the Tomas Bata University in Zlin.

Mr. Christmas (USA)

Bruce Metz has been retired for ages but he still has enough spirit to decorate his house with 50 000 sparkling lights, including some flashing reindeer, for Christmas. Bruce’s place has been a public attraction for several years now and many drive up just to see it. It’s hard to imagine that he started out with no electricity, using pots and pans for conducting the current.

Bloody Merry Christmas (Czech Republic)

Even on Christmas Eve, you better not skip the evening news. Especially if there is an announcement about an escaped crazy killer who disguises himself as a Christmas tree. This animated slasher from Prague’s FAMU is bloody great fun; cute dog, turkey dinner and chainsaw included.

The Reprimand (Czech Republic)

Fifteen year old Jakub lives with his mother and his younger brother in the Projects. Jakub doesn't want to accept the new family situation caused by the recent divorce of his parents. Its shortly after Christmas and the boys are sent to go shopping for a New Year's traditional lunch - the lentil. Jakub misses his father while his younger brother, Misa, wants everybody to be happy.
